What is Coaching?

Coaching is not the same as therapy or counseling. The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as "partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential."
You're already great. Together we can maximize your greatness.
My Philosophy
I believe our imperfections invite connection and growth.
When we accept the imperfect nature of life, we become more responsive to the present moment and open our hearts to connection. Often in my life when I feel frustrated and overwhelmed, it’s because what’s happening around me doesn’t match the picture of perfection in my head. Parents of toddlers can easily get caught up in having a perfect house and beautifully groomed children. Parents of older children may feel the weight of what the futures holds. In both instances, the joy of the moment can be lost. Accepting and creating a new picture—one that captures the messiness of family life, invites us to be more present and opens the heart to connection.
Coaching provides a safe place to honestly consider personal imperfections as a catalyst for change. In our culture, mistakes are often viewed as failures and we are quick to place blame. With this mindset, we miss the greatest opportunities for growth. Parents often come to me so frustrated and angry with their children. They are determined to find the formula to "fix these kids." Something very cool happens as the parents begin to consider their part in the equation. With consistent effort over time, the anger subsides, the relationship improves, and parents regain a space of influence with their children.
Coaching creates a safe place to practice new skills and thought patterns. It’s just like learning a new sport. My son learned to pole vault recently. It took hours of small incremental steps before his first attempt over the bar. And then, more hours of guided practice before he could successfully vault. The same pattern of growth applies in all areas of life. Coaching sessions become a safe place to get perspective, break things down, and practice.
